For a couple of years I have mused over the fact that a lot of people in England if you were to stop them (apart from get extremly annoyed that you stopped them) when asked “What is it to be English, or what is Englishness?” - the majority will look back at you in some puzzlement. I include myself in that number.

A while ago now, I signed up to a group of websites that are fighting towards the right for England to have it’s own legal parliament. Witanagemot has a lot of information, and for me is just a few different points of view. None of them however, have really helped me get any closer to identifying what it “IS” to be English, apart from moan and winge about all the things we “don’t” have? What right do we have, to a parliament of our own in order to decide our future(s), if we can’t identify who we are right now? This is something that a number of people in the international community find hard to take in I bet!

England’s only real identity at present that I can see is through the odd Sporting accolade here and there? Also maybe through Musical Culture. That’s about it, again my view is jaded completley by what “Organised Media” chooses to champion.

Historically England has been home to pioneers, who have shaped and changed the world. I’m a not saying all those changes were good either, but right across the spectrum of knowledge, from literature to engineering to science to medicine to politics there have been many pioneers in history coming from this nation, and indeed from Scotland, Wales and Ireland too! Trouble is, today, with the shambles that is our political infrastructure; our voice has grown dim in the global community. Instead of allowing the true heroes of our nations sing their song to the world; the engineers, the scientists, the writers etc… It is the politicians that apparently have the loudest voice?

Our democracy in this country is a prime example of democracy at it’s worst, because politicians are running under the mis-guided impression that they have “power” when elected to any position. A politician if elected needs to learn the simple fact that they are nothing more than a public servant, a voice for the people - in this day and age of lies, and deceit fuelled by media spin, politicians are singing their own songs in an attempt at self preservation; in so doing they have forgotten what it is to “LISTEN” to those that voted them into parliament in the first place.

In my view England hasn’t had a strong identity in all the time I have lived, it has been so caught up in the dying throws of the “Industrial Revolution” that it almost missed the “Political Revolution” sneak in through the back door! Along with the “Media Revolution”, and the “Spin Revolution” - like drones to the media many people and I don’t limit this to England and the UK either! People are led along by “Organised Media” like flocks of sheep.

Like the story “Cry Wolf” - I live in a country where, in the media; if the truth is actually spoken for once - I won’t even recognise it; and that for me sums up what it means to be English right now. “Blind to the Truth” - We all have an amazing PRIVILIDGE, (Not freedom of speech - because in this day and age even that is censored), “CHOICE” - people who do not agree with what I have written today -You have the CHOICE not to believe a word I say, and label me how you will, also people who feel as strongly as I do, you too have a CHOICE, come voting day; please use it wisely - make time to learn about who it is you are voting into parliament; by making blind choices on voting days you could potentially be voting the wrong person into the wrong job. This is almost like playing Russian Roulette with a loaded pistol in my opinion.

Until we as a nation grow up, CREATE a new identity, and learn to take our own destiny in our hands. We simply don’t deserve our own parliament.

What is you view?
