There are a number of ways to get to the Island, which is right next to the modernised airport that services Hong Kong. Last time I was here in 2003; I took the express train to Tun Chung and then caught a bus from there to Po Lin Monestary and the Big Buddha, this time we went on a ferry from Central to Mui Wo (which was famous for it’s Silver Mining now long since dissapeared into memory) and then a bus from there to Po Lin, if you are planning this route allow plenty of time as the ferry crossing takes 20-30mins and the bus takes 50mins to get the Po-Lin.

All of this took place yesterday by the way, 11th May.

I am still buzzing from taking in the Big Buddha for a second time. It filled me with so much energy and I almost feel like whilst I was there I was being treated to some special Reiki from another source. Before mounting the 267 steps upto the monument, we settled into the Monastery for something to eat as it was about lunchtime, It was a simple To-Fu offering but was very delicious with some of the locally grown tea.

Big Buddha

You know? These photo’s really don’t do it the proper justice. I think I will be returning here again, and hopefully there will be more sunshine too! On my next visit there may well be a quicker way to access this attraction too! With the opening of a new cable car connecting this with the new Airport!!
Big Buddha 2

I hope you like the selection of pictures I am uploading, it’s proving difficult to whittle down the best ones!
This of course is me!

Monks chanting
As we wandered the monastery (Lousie, Al and I as Rachel was working) we came across some monks chanting in the back, this was most definatley a special experience that I will take away with me, to hear them chanting with the bells and drums beating in harmony with their voices!
A closer look at the Big Buddha
This is a view of the Buddha after ascending the steps.
Monestary below
This is a view of the Monestary below. we decided to descend for the bus, as time was getting the better of us. On getting to the bus terminus we were told there was a 40minutes wait; oh well time for more exploring! We wandered down a path near the Monestary passing the Tea Gardens known as the “Wisdom Path” and it lead us to this Hidden Treasure!
Heart Sutra
This is a wooden Henge with the Heart Sutra (Sanskrit) carved into the poles which talks about the doctrine of “emptiness” and given more time I would certainly have chosen this spot for some meditation, but unfortunatley we had a bus to catch. Upon some reflection it comes to my mind that a poem I wrote some time ago is directly linked to the doctrine behind this sculpture>>

“I Know Nothing”

“You start with I know nothing
And take it all from there,
Don’t be afraid,
Or beckon self despair.
This is the road to Wisdom
And the surest path to peace,
So open up your mind;
And wait for the release.”

After the Big Buddha we headed back to Central, caught a tram to Wan Chai and took in a local football match with some beers, this was another amazing experience; everyone was so civilised, and amongst the spectators one or two people were playing chinese chess; which is a bit more involved than the chess you or I might be used to. I think the one’s wearing yellow won the footy match though I can’t be sure.

I hope you enjoyed today’s update. I’m gonna chill out for today (12th) and gather my energy for tonight (which will be your today…confused?? I know I am) we are off to Wan Chai (again) for the grand opening of a new bar with one of Rachel’s friends!
