Ever wondered what the Internet “Looks” like?
Posted by: cyberevolution in Uncategorized, tags: Band Stuff, Picture, Price of Fish, Random Thoughts, TechnobabbleI saw recently in the news about the stricken internet services in the Middle-East and India and this got me to thinking about what the Internet physically looks like - now; I thought I was a true geek until I found there are people out there that spend all their time actually mapping the internet!
There are a number of ways to view the WWW, just like any map - for instance, with a tradition map, you could have the traditional view with streets and names on etc… or you could have a more topological view showing the gradients of hills etc…
Taking this analogy you could view the internet map as a direct correlation of the world, since all public IP addresses are geographically assigned, this is pretty much a no brainer; and is the example I have chosen to include here:-
The following is the key to the colours:-
Asia Pacific - Red
Europe/Middle East/Central Asia/Africa - Green
North America - Blue
Latin American and Caribbean - Yellow
RFC1918 IP Addresses - Cyan
Unknown - White
There is also the more topological view of the internet (if you like the analogy) whereby each different color denotes the domain type - for example net, ca, us, com, org mil, gov, edu,jp, cn, tw, au, de, uk, it, pl, fr, br, kr, nl, unknown as shown in the following graphic:-
It’s a completely fascinating view of the internet as it was three years ago, as these images are sourced from The Opte Project which on the face of it - appears not to have been updated since 2005 - which I think is a shame!
Oh!! And in other news? It’s official - I am off with Wellington Brass Band to compete in the Nationals in Brisbane Autralia (provided my leave request gets approved!!) this Easter, we will be competing over Easter Weekend, and then I will head up the Gold Coast for the rest of the week before flying back (more than likley burned to a frazzel)….I am sooooooo excited!

We used to have a big poster of this in one of the offices at work. Haven’t a clue what happened to it though.
