….I’ve been looking at reverse engineering a website for one of my Aunts and finally got it all working apart from the URL as the DNS still needs refreshing with their registrar. Though it’s only taken me a couple of hours over 2 days to bottom it out, it’s such a great feeling to be able to look at a site built by a complete stranger, without a clue how they went about it - and move it to a new host and get it all working seemlessly (almost)!

It’s at times like this I come to realise I know a bit more about websites and MySQL than I thought!!

I’m gonna chill for the rest of the evening now - I’ve earned it!

  1. Today I had a customer ask how much it would cost to host his website… 20 pages… 400mb! They then asked if we had any web templates and that they were designing it in Publisher. ARGH!

  2. Try a website built around a single file/MySQL Content Management system, that’s freeware; and my Aunts previous webmaster was charging her megabucks for it!! I’m in the wrong job ;P

  3. Helen Johns says:

At least your aunt’s website worked when its designer administered it!!

  4. Can’t argue with the last comment :) and in all fairness the previous comment I made wasn’t meant to be too critical. After all - once I figured out what was missing from the site, it was clever and streamlined. The remaining woes of portability are largely down to the ugly world of ISP’s and DNS…
