Helpless is too weak a word…

Here I am, on the opposite side of the planet, I get through to the nurses station of the ward my mum is on, and they tell me I have to use ‘Patientline’ to speak to her….I politley explain to the nurse that I am calling from New Zealand and can I not have a quick chat on the phone at the nurses station?…”No, it would be too difficult to get mum to there….”, ok so mum is physically impaired and can’t move much, but it’s not impossible! I was given no option….this amounts to physical discrimination and institutionalisation on my mum’s part, since I am the calling party and incurring no cost on the hospital…..

I apologise for swearing so clearly on my blog, but I had to illustrate how strongly this MADNESS incenses me. I will wait till the morning, and try once more when a new shift of nurses are on….but there’s is no force on earth that will make me phone through Patientline from New Zealand, it’s bloody extortionate in the UK never mind from abroad?! Load of Crooks!!
To quantify it, to speak to my mum for just 5 minutes on one of those devil-lines would incur a tariff of over $6 not to mention any surcharge my local carrier would levy since this is not your average UK landline.
There’s got to be a better system guys, it’s about time Labour pulled there socks up with their social responsibilities or got out, and lets face it, they aren’t far off the door now! I’m so glad I’m not in the UK any more. The system is sapping it’s people - in fact the whole system is broken in my opinion. Funny really? In a bygone age when governements got into such a mess the opposition would call for a vote of ‘NO CONFIDENCE’ and a new government would be built. The more I see, the more I believe democracy in the UK has become flawed and corrupt.
I was once proud to call myself a loyal subject of the British nation; but now, I am ashamed…
EDIT - OK, so whilst I have my consumer bee in my bonnet; and the soap-box is still warm, I have taken the liberty of getting in touch with ‘patientline’ to ask if they can explain to me, how they reached the tariff figure they currently charge so watch this space…..if I get a response I will post it here for all to see.

I just phoned my doctors out-of-hours service because my daughter is very poorly and needs a doctor to see her. I got the usual automated service: Make an appointment to see your doctor on Monday or call the NHS Helpine, or if it is an emergency then hold. I was put through to what I assume is an emergency call centre in the Leamington area (xxxx xxxx xxxx).
A woman came on the line and asked what number I was calling from. I said “I’m afraid I don’t know. I can check if you give me a minute”. She immediately switched into ‘Patronising mode’ and started talking like a robot: “I-cannot-progess-this-call-any-further-without-a-phone-number etc etc—–”. She then continued to read off the NHS Patronising Crib Sheet. Eventually through gritted teeth I supplied my number and the conversation finally got going. She asked me what was wrong with my daughter so I started to explain. After i’d spoken about 3 words she butted in with the “can i just stop you there”….then theirs a pause with muffled typing in the background….and then she says “continue”. Then I say another 3 words and she says “can i just stop you there”….another pause + muffled typing….”continue” . After 5 minutes of listening to this patronising twat of a women she told me a doctor would call me back. By now my stress levels were so high I was going to call myself an ambulance!
10 minutes passed and a doctor called me. Ring ring…ring ring…. I picked up the phone “Hello”. Response is “##### #### ####”. The NHS had clearly supplied the standard out-of-hours asian doctor who can barely speak a word of english. Eventually I managed to work out that he wants to know what the problem is….so i give a brief but concise overview. After a short pause I get a barely legible response “tek er to de walk in center”. What the f*ck ! I’ve just phoned the emergency doctor to get my daughter the urgent appointment she needs and avoid waiting for 6 f*cking hours in the walk-in-centre. What a f*cking disgrace. This government take a huge chunk of my wages every month in tax for the NHS….and this is what I get. I’m not surprised that attacks on NHS staff are so high…..your all a bunch of useless cunts. I’ve only had to deal with you over the phone and I want to kick the f*ck out of you. This is a f*cking national disgrace. For those people out there who big up the NHS and refer to nurses and doctors as angels; f*cking wake up to yourself. They are a bunch of lazy layabouts providing a piss poor service and wasting hard working taxpayers money. If I ever see a doctor on fire I will piss on him….but not enough to put the fire out. F*cking wankers the lot of em.
That’s a lot of “F”s my friend, but I am sure for the strength of feeling you have, it’s warrented!! And to add a little to this saga, I heard absolutley NOTHING back from those THEIVING Patientline lot. Companies should not be allowed to profitere out of the ill and infirm. It’s immoral. But then we live in a world filled with Immorality these days do we not?
